Filter Socks
Have you seen large sock-like tubes on highways? These are filter socks. At River Valley Recreation, we offer erosion control filter socks to reduce soil erosion in construction sites, roadsides and around storm drains. Filter socks trap sediments, heavy metals and oil and ensure only water passes through. An erosion control filter sock is an ideal solution for preventing all commercial-grade erosions.
What Are Filter Socks?
Erosion control or compost filter socks are long mesh tubes filled with composted materials that filter water to control erosion and retain sediments. Filtration socks can be filled with parboiled rick husks, activated carbon and zeolite, while the skin is made of materials like polypropylene or cotton netting. They’re a higher-performing alternative to traditional erosion materials.
Filtration socks are versatile and come in diverse sizes and filtration capabilities. They usually come in diameters ranging from 5-10 inches and lengths of up to 200 feet. They are often available in three shapes — round, square and rectangle — and in colors like black or green.
Applications of Filtration Socks
You can use erosion control filter socks where soil erosion occurs. Soil erosion can happen due to heavy traffic, construction and natural forces. Although we cannot control all forms of soil erosion, we can use compost filter socks to prevent some of it.
Some applications of filter socks include:
- Perimeter control: Compost filter socks are used as silt fences in construction sites to hold back sediments and protect the perimeter. They are an ideal and affordable solution for sediment control. They are the best perimeter control where you have limited space, rocks, asphalt or urban areas where trenching to install silt fences is unsuitable.
- Inlet protection: Filter socks are used as inlet protection in storm drains and curb inlets. When you put them in front of a storm drain, they prevent sediments, leaves and debris from entering and blocking it. Depending on the length of the drain inlet, you can use custom-length filtration socks.
- Check dams: You need check dams in waterways or ditches subject to erosion. They trap sediments and reduce the speed of water. Compost filter socks are ideal for check dams because you can cut the size for each site. They are also easy to remove. After the job, you cut the sock and leave the mulch in place.
- Slope interruption: Erosion control filter socks are installed laterally along slopes to reduce the velocity of water flowing down the slope and catch the sediments. Filtration socks are heavy, weighing up to 2,000 pounds, which keeps them firmly on the ground and withstands heavy flow. They are ideal for moderate, easily accessible slopes due to their weight.
Benefits of Using River Valley Recreation Filter Socks
Filter socks have many benefits. Some of their benefits include:
- Minimizing runoff velocity to trap sediments
- Filtering sediments and reducing runoff of sediments and heavy metals
- Accumulating contaminants like oil and heavy metals on the surface
- Acting as a barrier for gullies and rills on slopes
- Providing a cost-effective solution per volume of runoff treated
- Requiring minimal maintenance
