PIP Surfacing
At River Valley Recreation, we provide poured-in-place rubber playground surfaces to give your playground a safe, unique look. Poured-in-place (PIP) rubber surfacing is comprised of a base layer of encapsulated shredded recycled rubber and a top wear course from materials like high-quality ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) or thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV) granules.
PIP offers high-performance solutions for play areas, walking paths, child care centers and spray parks, especially compared to playground rubber mulch. A pour-in-place rubber surface is ideal for a reliable and resilient playground. We have trained and certified personnel at River Valley Recreation to install durable and attractive PIP surfacing.
Our Outdoor Playground Design Process
Benefits of Using Poured-in-Place Rubber Playground Surfaces
Poured-in-place rubber surfacing has a lot of benefits to you and your patrons, like:
- Durability: PIP surfacing is made of rubber fragments glued together and lasts longer than most playground surfacing. Materials like EPDM are resistant to cracking and can withstand harsh weather and severe temperatures.
- Low maintenance needs: Poured-in-place rubber playground surfaces are low-maintenance and easy to clean. Unlike other playground surfaces that need regular maintenance, you can go a long time with only simple cleaning.
- Accessibility: PIP surfacing is the most accessible with its smooth surface. It is ADA-compliant and provides an inclusive and safe playground for children in wheelchairs and those who have other physical limitations.
- Anti-slip surface: Solid rubber surfacing for playgrounds is anti-slip, making it safe even during rain and wet seasons.
- No splinter: With rubber materials for playground surfacing, children are safe from wood mulch splinters and falls on paved playgrounds.
- No surprises: In playgrounds accessible to animals, you will no longer worry about kids finding surprises buried by animals in mulch.
- Custom designs: With pour-in-place rubber surfacing, you can add logos, shapes and other elements to match your playground theme or create a playful experience. Our design team can make your imagination come true.
Factors Affecting the Cost of PIP Surfacing
While the initial cost of putting in the poured-in-place rubber surfacing may be high, the cost cancels out with the low maintenance and durability of the surfacing. Some of the factors affecting the cost of PIP rubber playground surface include:
- Aggregate foundation: PIP surfacing has two layers — an aggregated foundation and a rubber top layer. The cost depends on the aggregate you want and the site’s preparation. The base layer needs a level ground and adequate compacting for durable pour-in-place rubber. The more preparation the site needs, the higher the cost.
- Rubber thickness: Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is poured in liquid form over the aggregate foundation and left to cure. The thickness of the rubber depends on your preference. The thicker the rubber, the higher the impact resistance and the safer it can be.
- Color preferences: PIP surfacing can be made of EPDM, which comes in color options like red, blue and green. If you need custom colors, we can use color granules specially created for this purpose. The coloring process is complex, which adds to the cost.
- Bonding agent: A bonding agent holds the rubberized top layer in place. Two types of bonding agents are available — aromatic glue and aliphatic glue. Aromatic glue is the most used and is pocket-friendly. We might use aliphatic glue with lighter color layers, which tends to cost more.
