Playground Safety Surfacing (EWF)
If you want to build a commercial playground for your school, park or church, River Valley Recreation is your go-to for all playground equipment and surfacing. We have IPEMA Certified Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) to surface your playground and help keep your patrons safe. At River Valley Recreation, we understand the need for fall protection in play areas and use engineered wood fiber for safer surfacing in playgrounds.
Benefits of Engineered Wood Fiber for Playgrounds
Some of the benefits of EWF include:
- Simple installation: Get your play area ready to go sooner with engineered wood fiber playground surfacing, which is easy to install and if installed by one of our blower trucks it can be done with minimal disruption to your staff or operations.
- Shock-absorbing properties: When properly installed and maintained, EWF can meet ASTM F1292-22 — this standard measures a playground surface’s shock absorbency.
- Additional safety: EWF can also offer slip resistance, limiting the risk of falls. If children do happen to fall, the shock absorbency can minimize their injuries.
- Cost-effectiveness: Engineered wood fiber is cost-effective saving your operations money.
How Often Do You Replace Playground EWF?
Engineered Wood Fiber has a long life span, but it depends on usage, climate and maintenance. Public parks and schools may need to replenish the wood chips faster due to continued use than churches, which children may only use on weekends. Generally, check your playground wood chips at least once annually and replenish them as needed to maintain the correct depth.
At River Valley Recreation we have multiple NPSI Certified Playground Inspectors on staff and we will help you maintain your playground and advise when to replenish the EWF.
How to Choose Suitable Playground Mulch
Choosing suitable playground mulch is essential to maintain the safety of the playground and help prevent injuries. When choosing engineered wood fiber for playgrounds, you need to consider several factors:
- Is it certified?
- Playground size
- Budget
- Depth of the mulch needed
- Maintenance needs
With EWF we typically install it at a 12″ depth so that once it is naturally compacted and settled it is at a average depth of 9″.
